Contained is a study into the effects of pounding on the collapse performance of midblock wood-frame "soft-story" buildings. Various pounding situations were analyzed, and it was confirmed that pounding can change the collapse risk when compared to the risk of the same building having no adjacent buildings. The key parameters affecting building response due to pounding are explained and implications for design and public policy are discussed. The objectives are to provide design professionals and building officials with a better understanding of the effects of pounding on the expected performance of retrofitted buildings as well as the benefits of systematic retrofit programs that upgrade adjacent buildings within reasonable timeframes to have similar relative strengths.
