In order to optimize the speed trajectory of a vehicle under realistic driving environment, a dynamic speed limit matrix was defined to reflect the predicted traffic events within a certain horizon. The speed limit matrix is applied as constraint in a novel approach of forward discrete dynamic programming, to calculate the optimized speed trajectory. A base driving trajectory which was measured in real traffic and an optimized trajectory which was generated under similar boundary condition were tested with a full electric vehicle on the test track. Test results show significant energy saving potential of the speed trajectory optimization, with even less travel time. With a further post processing of the test results, it is shown that the energy saving potential becomes even more significant with a conventional vehicle.
