Worker injuries resulting from inadequate lockout/tagout procedures can be debilitating and even fatal. It is the OEHS professional’s responsibility to guide employers on their obligations to generate and maintain equipment specific hazardous energy control procedures. OSHA 29CFR1910.147 (Control of Hazardous Energy) require the generation of equipment specific hazardous energy control procedures. ANSI Z244.1 (Control of Hazardous Energy Lockout/Tagout and Alternative Methods) and NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) consensus standards provide guidance in energy control procedure generation. They provide direction on decision-making when hazardous energy control procedures are necessary and a chronological sequence for procedure generation and implementation.
