In recent years, refiners have seen strong trends toward stricter environmental regulations of their products and the need to be capable of processing heavy feed stocks. Today it is crucial for refiners to have a flexible hydrogen production and recovery system in place to react and to deal with these ever increasing trends. The recovery of hydrogen from Refinery Off Gases (ROG), in lieu of its usage as refinery fuel gas, is one important factor on the way to a cost effective hydrogen management system. Hydrogen recovery requires purification steps like pressure swing adsorption or membrane systems. However, if the ROG hydrogen content is too low these options become less economical and the direct usage of ROG as steam reformer feed is an attractive alternative. This presentation outlines the key features of the described processes and introduces a guideline for optimized process selection.
