Critical success requirements in development of waste related renewable energy options in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi wishes to move from a situation where in 2008 about 97% of all waste arising from construction & demolition, commercial, industrial and municipal activities was dumped at sites in the desert, to a position in the next five years where it will become a world leader, diverting up to 90% of all waste from landfill. The paper will review some of the key issues, policies, strategies, data sets, studies and plans being developed for the necessary supporting waste infrastructure to deliver these ambitious targets. Key relationships necessary to ensure the delivery of this mission will be identified and examined with the issues raised by using biomass or waste derived fuels as a renewable fuel source in power generation schemes.
