Passive 2-Phase Techniques to Control Temperatures in Power Systems

This paper outlines the merits of using volatile dielectric liquids in a passive 2-phase or evaporative mode to cool power electronics, fuel cells and lithium ion batteries. This technology enables condensation preheating of fuel cells and lithium ion batteries. Compared with more conventional pumped liquid technologies, it provides advantages relating to simplicity, cost, reliability, size, efficiency and dielectric and fire protection. Data are presented from recent conceptual experiments that demonstrate the viability of specific techniques useful in the aforementioned applications. A review of cooling fluids shows fluoroketones to be among the best candidates based on their safety, dielectric, environmental and performance characteristics.
