Inspections to guarantee battery stack integrity have traditionally been performed by quality assurance personnel. To this end, this paper describes a theoretical approach for using a commercial visual inspection system to perform the quality inspection of thermal battery stacks during a battery production build. The vision system can take pictures of the battery stack prior to the wrapping operation. Image quality and registration can be further optimized using the MatLab Image Processing Toolbox. In theory, the Visual Inspection System can compare a battery stack to a battery that meets requirements. By comparing a stacked battery to the baseline, the vision system should be able to identify stacking defects if they exist.
