A Study of SCADA Systems and Their Security

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are widely used in industries for data collection and control. Such systems have made substantial progress over the past 40 years in terms of functionality, scalability and performance. Since SCADA systems have adapted to more open-based software and hardware standards, they are more vulnerable to intrusion through internal and external networks than conventional networks. While providing a survey on the topic this paper analyses the main attacks against SCADA systems. In addition, some important security methods are discussed. Attention is particularly paid to the security methods using firewalls.
