One of the first ever global reports into industrial cyber security, 'Myths and Facts behind Cyber Security Risks for Industrial Control Systems,' revealed a tenfold increase in successful cyber attacks on process control and SCADA systems since 2000. The report, which was produced late last year by security experts at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in association with the PA Consulting Group, identified that many of the systems under attack were responsible for the operation of 'critical services, such as electricity, petroleum production, nuclear power, water, transportation and communications. The report further states that this figure could be underestimating the extent of the problem as many companies are unwilling to report an attack for fear of negative publicity.
