Properties of Super Austenitic Stainless Steel PM Material Made by Gas Atomization and HIP

Components manufactured by near net shape (NNS) technology using gas atomized metal powder and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) are finding increasing use in demanding applications such as oil & gas, pulp and paper, nuclear, aeronautics etc. One trend in these applications is to go towards more advanced materials in order to gain advantage from improved properties such as mechanical and corrosion resistance. An example of such materials is super austenitic stainless steels. In this paper, some recent results of a gas atomized super austenitic stainless steel powder produced in a small scale pilot plant and HIPed to full density are presented. Properties such as corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the super austenitic powder metallurgy (PM) HIP material are compared to forged super austenitic steels and other commonly used PM-HIP material solutions such as duplex and super duplex stainless steels.
