In this paper, we consider the procedure for selecting the material of permanent magnets to excite the magnetoelectric starter used when starting a gas turbine engine. A flow chart is presented explaining the sequence of operations when designing a starter inductor. The design process includes determining the volume of the PM, its optimization through calculation of the magnetic field, FE analysis for each of the materials selected at the preliminary stage and allows you to provide the necessary power and torque of the starter for various modes of its operation: hot start, dry motoring, flushing the gas-air duct. The PM material and starter inductor are optimized according to several criteria: the cost of the PM, eddy current losses in the PM, resistance to demagnetization from the temperature and the armature reaction field. 2D FE modeling with the Maxwell software package was used in the study.
