Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) plays a vital role in Photo-voltaic (PV) systems for extracting maximum power from the PV panel. Perturb & Observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm is used rapidly to generate the duty cycle for the DCDC converter. However, during a fast variation in environmental conditions, the performance of this algorithm degrades. This paper exploits adaptive sliding Mode control (ASMC) for the dc-dc boost converter. The current reference for ASMC is derived from the improved current oriented MPPT algorithm. The comparison of the proposed method with conventional MPPT (P&O based and InC) is exploited. The controller exploits the superior performance in terms of fast-tracking with reduced oscillations compared to P&O based MPPT methods (P&O, P&O-PI) during a change in environmental conditions.
