Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are among the most widely accepted motor in automotive industries for propulsion of electric vehicles. BLDC motor requires knowledge of sector (rotor position) to perform current commutation using power electronics converter which can be determined in different ways. Hall sensors are usually used for sector identification. Earlier works exists on determining the sector using hall sensors but, different mathematical computation for sector identification based on hall sensors feedback were not reported. This paper presents and compares few existing techniques of sector identification using hall sensor. Further, binary to decimal converter based sector identification method for BLDC motor drives is proposed having minimum mathematical computational effort. Finally, the simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink environment are incorporated and experimental results using 24V, 4000 rpm BLDC motor, DRV8301 based BLDC drives and control algorithm implementation on F28335 platform are presented to validate the effectiveness of different sector identification techniques.
