A Balancing Act; Replacing a 40 year old Sanitary Sewer FM through one of the original Colonial Settlements in America and impact of CNET's founder on the project.

The project involved the installation of approximately 7,000 linear feet of new sanitary sewer force main piping in the Kingsmill community and the historic Colonial Williamsburg area in Williamsburg, Virginia. Approximately 4,700 linear feet of new force main was installed by the conventional open cut construction method and approximately 2,000 linear feet of new sewer force main by the horizontal directional drill (HDD) method. Several impediments for this project resulted in a prolonged project schedule. These impediments included environmental factors, stakeholder oppositions, archeological investigations, legal proceedings, easement acquisitions, and endangered species. We will discuss in detail these issues and present the lessons learned from this once in a lifetime project.
