Do You Really Need Five Days For Nutrient Removal? Intensifying BNR using an MABR

The MABR is a promising biological nutrient removal intensification technology. Our research evaluates the biological nutrient removal performance and efficacy of a hybrid MABR-activated sludge (MABR-AS) system treating primary effluent. Results suggest that a hybrid MABR-AS system can be operated to achieve a total nitrogen of less than 10 mg-N/L at a relatively low SRT compared to conventional suspended growth systems. Importantly, operational management of the biofilm is critical to achieve efficacious nitrification performance in the MABR.
