We have found that annealing at 550°C for 8h before applying voltage leads to remarkable improvement for fabricating periodically-poled (PP) structures of good quality in 8mol% MgO-doped congruent LiTaO_3 crystal. Uniform PP structures with a period of ~7.6μm were formed and applied to waveguide quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation devices.
