Learning to learn needs to be based on reputable scientific theories in order to be effective, and at the same time they need to be tried and tested in real life teaching and learning situations. A challenge is to develop programs where strategies and habits are built into a broad, coherent approach where aspects are mutually supportive. A program has been developed at the University of South Africa, as part of a pilot project rolled out in 37 South African Schools. This program addresses aspects of Identity (characteristics of the learner), Mastery (habits and strategies for effective learning) and Legacy (ways to show what they know, as well as using data, information and knowledge to address real life issues).
