Drug delivery to the conjunctiva with an eyelid transdermal patch of ketotifen

The aim of this study is to investigate the drug delivery to the conjunctiva in rabbits and the inhibitory effect on histamine-induced conjunctival edema in guinea pigs after eyelid transdermal administration of ketotifen (KT) patch. When the 14CKT patch was applied on the lower eyelid of rabbits, the radioactivity transferred to the conjunctiva via eyelid. The pharmacological effect of KT patch using the model of guinea pigs was observed dosedependently and continually. The results suggest the eyelid transdermal administration is a promising route for allergic conjunctivitis.
