Development and Characterisation of a Novel Wound Formulation for the Delivery of Metronidazole

Metronidazole was encapsulated in chitosan-alginate beads for potential application to the wound environment. The impact of additives and modifying the cross-linking medium and on the properties of the beads was investigated. Bead integrity and structure was enhanced through the addition of inorganic additives. Encapsulation was increased by adding metronidazole to both the chitosan and alginate components prior to cross-linking.
