Stainless Steel For Bridge Construction – Material For The Towers Of The Stonecutters Bridge, Hong Kong

The paper outlines the design of the cable stay mono towers for the Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong with particular reference to the upper composite section with a concrete core and stainless steel skin. The paper describes the materials selection for these stainless steel skins in relation to the required mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and surface finish. The paper also describes development of the design through the fabrication of a full scale prototype of the skin.
