BUILDING AN ENERGY DASHBOARD THAT HELPS PEOPLE DRIVE THEIR BUILDINGS

Energy dashboards are typically directed at either engineers or consumers. Dashboards designed for engineers are populated with technical information, alarms, and complex trends to enable the identification of energy inefficiencies in a building. Public-facing dashboards, popularized relatively more recently, are designed for consumers and convey simpler trends with a greater focus on aesthetics and framing of content to promote interest and engagement. Dashboards with a narrow focus commonly fail to satisfy many users, and dashboards built to reach a broader spectrum often fail to meet the needs of any one user. With an internal team of staff and researchers we have developed the Campus Energy Education Dashboard (CEED) as part of a broader Campus Energy Feedback System (CEFS) to simultaneously meet the requirements of a wide range of stakeholders. CEED is a map-based dashboard that shows energy data for buildings on a large university campus. Energy use intensity metrics, real-time demand data, and historic data are available for our engineer and data analyst stakeholders. For students and staff, we focus on usability, providing context for the data, prioritizing aesthetics, and layering information in successive levels of detail. CEFS integrates CEED with a campus-wide thermal feedback mobile application that allows students and staff to report the thermal condition of any room on campus. CEFS empowers building occupants with knowledge and input into campus energy operations, and enables Facilities Management to improve building energy efficiency. We will describe the key elements in developing an energy feedback system that really works.
