Waxes and metallic stearate are very well knownlubricants for P/NI applications. However, the admixing of theselubricants into iron powder mixes significantly reduces thegreen strength of P/M components. Consequently, panscontaining such lubricants cannot be easily green machined. Itwould therefore be beneficial to the P/M industry to developnew lubricating systems that will sufficiently enhance the greenstrength of P/Ni components to enable machining in the greenstate and achieve considerable cost reduction.The objectives of this study are to describe new lubricatingsystems and evaluate their effects on green and sinteredproperties of F-0005 specimens pressed within a density rangeof 6.8 and 7.15 g/cm~3, at compacting temperatures of 45 deg Cto 65 deg C. Results showed that the green strength achievedwith these new lubricating systems was increased by as much astwo to five times compared to that of conventional waxlubricants while achieving similar sintered properties.
