The harvest season of wheat in Eastern and Northern China is in June every year. It is also the period when straw burning takes place seriously. This paper presents the distribution of aerosol optical depth (AOD) imagery at visible wavelengths (0.55μm) in Eastern and Northern China, which is derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) data. One procedure of the straw burning is analyzed by using the combination of AOD data, wind direction data, and fire point data in this paper. The results clearly suggested a significant correlation between biomass fire occurrences and variations in the AOD over the study region. The results show that using AOD data to monitor the biomass burning is possible.
