The ALANIS-Aerosols project is a feasibility study on the use of existing EO-based products for discriminating between natural aerosols emitted by boreal Eurasian forests and long-range transported anthropogenic aerosols. Two different approaches will be followed. The first approach is the investigation, development and validation of novel algorithms which solely exploit as input currently available EO-based products. In particular the use satellite of products to determine the occurrence of nucleation events will be kinvestigated. The second approach is the investigation, development and validation of novel strategies for the optimum use of existing EO-based products, ground-based observations and chemical transport models. These approaches will be brought together in three case studies using data from selected ground sites located in boreal Eurasia. These case studies will include an evaluation of the merits of each method.
