Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cost is a major part of the total life cycle cost for an offshore wind farm. Due to the rough coastal weather conditions, limited availability of the medium to transfer maintenance personnel and complexity in inventory planning decisions for spare parts O&M cost for offshore wind farm is more than its onshore counterpart. Significant reduction in O&M cost can make offshore wind energy as affordable as onshore. Three O&M policies are found to be popular and effective. One of the strategies is condition-based maintenance (CBM) which reduces cost by preventing uneven breakdown giving prior warning signal. Another one is the opportunistic maintenance policy which prefers to perform maintenance activity whenever an opportunity comes due to failure of any component. The third one is the risk-based maintenance policy which applies Bayesian decision theory for maintenance decisions. The objective of this article is to conduct a comparative study over these existing maintenance strategies and their cost efficiencies for an offshore wind farm as a guideline to the practitioners.
