A highly sensitive single-fiber (SF) Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has been proposed for detection of toxicity due to potassium based elements. The measurement was made by preparing the solution of potassium permanganate (KMn04) with its refractive index varying from 1.3377 to 1.3500 refractive index unit (RIU) depending on its concentration. It was observed that the sensitivity of the SF-MZI was higher when both tapers were dipped in the solution instead of only one taper. The respective sensitivity was 100.6 and 132.2 nm/RIU for first and both tapers, respectively. The configuration was found to be highly sensitive and stable.
