In polymer electrolyte water electrolysis (PEWE), mass transport losses are the least understood overvoltage contribution. Underlying origin as well as correlation parameters with the micro-structure of the porous transport layer (PTL) are not identified. X-ray imaging has the potential to clarify the relation between oxygen transport and mass transport losses, but in the highly absorbing titanium porous structures the contrast between water and gas is weak. Therefore, imaging parameters need to be carefully tuned to identify the two phases.
