Recently, deterioration of steel infrastructures such as bridges due to atmospheric corrosion has manifested and therefore, countermeasures against corrosion are strongly desired because rusts formed on carbon steels are poorly protective. In order to improve the protectiveness of rust layer, the understanding on the characteristics of rusts on carbon steels is indispensable. Weathering steels are well-known to exhibit better atmospheric corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. The improved corrosion resistance of weathering steels is ascribed to protective layers on weathering steels during long-term exposure to the atmosphere. It has been reported that the additive elements such as Cr, Cu, Ni and P used for weathering steels contribute to the formation of protective layers. In the present work, we examined the introduction of various metallic cations into rust layers on carbon steel to modify the structure and composition of rust layers and thereby their resulting electrochemical properties.
