The International Space Station as a Platform for Addressing Sustainability and Global Societal Issues

The International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory is creating a new era of research in space to improve life on Earth. As the only crewed orbiting laboratory, the ISS National Laboratory brings tremendous value to society by enabling scientific discovery and technology development that could help provide potential solutions to global societal and environmental issues in ways not possible on Earth. This paper will review cases in which access to the space environment and facilities onboard the ISS National Laboratory helped to catalyze solutions to address sustainability issues on Earth, with the goal of spurring additional opportunities for research in low Earth orbit and partnerships with ISS National Laboratory for developing solutions.
