Process Safety Leading Indicators By Environmental Experts Point of View

Process safety accidents can cause severe environmental damage. Process safety indicators are the key elements to improve the safety performance of the process. They can identify factors and causes that may lead to major accidents. Leading indicators are a set of future-oriented metrics that indicate the performance of protection layers that prevent accidents. It is much important to identify leading indicators of process safety in order to verify the weakness and deficiencies in the management system of process safety. This paper shows a methodological framework based on the initial selection of 77 leading indicators; the selection of two groups of experts, one with experience on process safety and another with experience on environmental analysis; the ranking of the leading indicators through the use of a fuzzy model and finally the comparison of the results obtained from the two groups of experts. The results showed the comparison among the opinions of two experts group, the ranking of the most important leading indicators according to opinion of process safety experts and environmental experts and which indicators need to be monitored from the point of view of each group of expert.
