During the development of the DirectDrive transmission at John Deere, an electro-magnetic shift system was implemented to actuate synchronized gearshifts. This presentation describes the development process and the specific characteristics of the electro-magnetic actuation. The presentation starts with an overview of the components of the system, which includes the power supply, control logic, electronics, electromagnets, and mechanical shifting components. Then, the special requirements of the mechanical shifting components and the electromagnetically generated shift forces are described. Later, an overview of electrical and electronic infrastructure provides the basis for the presentation of the actuator controls and monitoring of the shift state. Finally the system verification and feedback from the field will be shown.
