The tundish is the final equipment that is used formetallurgical treatment of metal before casting takesplace in the mould. There are a lot of mathematicaland physical simulations that describe mixing in thetundish, but there is limited data covering practicaltundish measurement with the exception of tracingelement addition. The shortage of industrialmeasurements is due to the extreme difficulty ofexperiment preparation. This paper describes thecomplex measurement of level behaviour intundishes combining electromagnetic (EM) levelmeasurement together with mass and manual levelmeasurements. Results show that both mass and EMmeasurement are reliable but that manualmeasurement is at best only indicative. An evaluationof measurement error was undertaken followed by acorrelation of the mass and level in the total tundishprocess – draining, refilling and normal run levelcasting were included. Complex long term analysis ofdata showed that applied EM level technology isreliable, practical and cost effective for continuousindustrial measurement applications. In the casting ofmetals it can help optimize the process control whileincreasing the cast yield. Further analysis producedthe interesting findings of refractory wear description,level wave detection and wave height evaluation.From a practical point of view the most interestingobservation was a gradual decrease of metal level inthe tundish at the same mass during the course oflong casting sequences. This was due to bothrefractory wear and an increase of slag volume.
