Nitrogen is one of the key factors that have much influence on the trophic status of lakes, and the biogeochemical cycl- ing of nitrogen plays an important role in lake ecosystems. This paper reviewed the input and output of nitrogen and the excha- nge of nitrogen between sediment and water in all kinds of lakes (oligotrophic lakes, mesotrophic lakes and eutrophic lakes). Transfers of nitrogen through the food chains in algal lake and macrophytic lake were also analyzed. This paper mainly focused on the advanced research in the processes of nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation which various microorganisms take part in. Methods and techniques in researching the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen were summarized, and finally the insufficiency interiorly and future directions were pointed out.
