Cellulose was liquefied in the presence of phenol and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) as a catalyst to investigate its behavior during phenol liquefaction of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) bark. The phenol liquefaction rate of cellulose for sulfuric acid (SA) was about 1.3-1.4 times faster than that for PTSA. However, the results from GPC and GC-MS revealed that, in both catalysts, the liquefied material of cellulose was similar in nature. Accordingly, it was thought that hot water extract (HWE), which contains a high amount of polyphenols, plays an important role in radiata pine bark liquefaction. Phenol liquefaction of cellulose with HWE was especially retarded in the case of SA catalyst. It was considered that a condensation reaction was severely occurred in the presence of SA catalyst compared to PTSA catalyst, between cellulose and HWE.
