Long-term stability of Tertiary clay slopes in the Polish Carpathian Foredeep

The paper presents the problem of the natural slope stability in the river valleys of the Vistula and the San in the Polish Carpathian Foredeep. Mass movements, the conditions of development and the stabilization of landslides are presented as a result of the activity of physical-mechanical properties (Tertiary-Miocene clays and their weathering), as well as residual shearing strength and time. High sensitivity to exogenic factors is a very important feature of Tertiary clays. Under the influence of cyclic drying and wetting they constitute a medium with the properties varying from the soil with very good strength parameters to weathered soil eluvium with low strength parameters. No deformities are observed on the slopes inclined below 7-8° - these slopes are stable.
