Fuel Cell Technology in Marine Applications Experiences achieved in the FCSHIP Project

Existing first commercial applications of Fuel Cells (FC) beside the systems in space industry are marine systems in submarines. Ships will be a first market for off-highway applications. For merchant ships the way for pilot projects is currently prepared by research projects like the EC project FCSHIP. Driven by the strong environmental benefits combined with high efficiencies the FC-Technology will find the way into the shipping world. Safe use of gas and other uncommon fuels onboard of ships and reforming of liquid fuels will be key techniques. The presentation gives a short summary of research activities in FC technology in shipping industry. The main characteristics of high and low temperature FC-Systems are presented. Special focus is given to shipping applications. Conclusions from the different parts of work done in the FCSHIP project are presented and the safety aspects of shipboard FC-Systems are included.
