Practical experience with compact papermachine wet end systems has increased the understanding of the function of the systems. Contrary to the first expectations compactness not only improves the responsiveness of the system but also improves process stability. After removing air from the process water, the paper making system can be simple, compact and hydraulically closed. It is designed according to principles used when designing electrical circuits. The paper discusses basic design principles for a compact system and their influence on system performance. A compact process solution and results obtained with this is reviewed.
