Economic Assessment Model of Irrigated Land in Overexploited Aquifer

This work presents a model of economic assessment for irrigated lands in order to establish the possible compensatory allowances to the farmer for the total or partial withdrawal of the water use rights in over-exploited aquifers. This is one of the possible solutions considered in the Spanish Hydrologic National Plan (HNP, 2000) to solve the environmental problems caused in a surface of 16000 km{sup}2 named Upper Guadiana. The model analyzes the gross margins of farms with rotation of crops considered to be better adapted to the region conditions, according the level of available water. The monetary evaluation of the m{sup}3 of water when the water endowment of the farms is reduced from 4500 m{sup}3/ha to much lower values (for example 1500 m{sup}3/ha) has been performed capitalizing to the 3% the loss of gross margin originated in 6 representative farms of the area.
