Transportation Simulation Using The High Level Architecture

The High Level Architecture (HLA) is a Department of Defense effort directed at the premise that an individual simulation or set of simulations developed for one purpose can be combined in another application under the HLA concept of federation. Though the HLA originates from military applications, the architecture appears suited for civilian applications as well. The ability to couple geographically, organizationally, or otherwise distributed simulations, is of special interest for traffic applications. The objective of this paper is to address the specific questions of making existing traffic simulations HLA compliant, evaluating HLA support software, and evaluating methods developed to test for HLA compliance.
