Integrated Planning for Air Quality and Growth Management for the Vancouver Region

The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) is a regional government partnership of 20 cities and municipalities and 2 electoral areas that make up the metropolitan area of Greater Vancouver. The GVRD is the fastest growing metropolitan area in Canada with a 14.3 percent population increase to 1.8 million people in the five year period from 1991 to 1996. Given that motor vehicle emissions are the predominant threat to clean air in this region, the integration of land use, transportation and air quality planning is essential to reduce air pollution and maintain clean air int he face of rapid growth. The GVRD has developed a coordinated strategy in an Air Quality Management Plan and a Livable Region Strategic Plan to deal with these three key regional planning issues.
