Except for polychlorinated biphenyls at Dew Line sites, lcoal sources of most persistent organic compounds in the Arctic are negligible and their occurrence is largely attributable to transport from midlatitudes. Semi-stationary high pressure systems residing over northern Asia and N. America in winter advect polluted air from mid to high latitudes. For example, airborne BaP concentrations (pg/m~3) in 1994 peaked int he winter, averaging 4.8 in March and only < 0.2 in August. PCB-101 and alpha-HCH are volatile and widely distributed over the earth's surface, and are constantly redistributed between the air and other media due to their persistence, volatility, Henry's Law constant, and other properties.
