The degradation of cellulose and cellulose samples impregnated with certain salts has been investigated by thermal analysis techniques. The behavior in air and in nitrogen is noted, for both the treated and nutreated samples. A comparison is made between the samples using the alpha _r - alpha _s plot, which can be used as a tool to examine the solid state reactivities of the materials being compared. The method relies on the calculation of the mass loss data from the thermogravimetry unit being converted into alpha , the fraction decomoposed. This indicated the reactivity of the treated samples to be greater than that for alpha -cellulose in nitrogen. In air, the sample treated with ammonium phosphate appeared less reactive than alpha -cellulose.
