In October 1993, Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory initiated a cooperative agreement to research pollution prevention approaches for reducing indoor air emissions from office equipment. Initial review of the literature revealed a lack of published data that could be used for evaluating office equipment emissions and for identifying pollution prevention opportunities. Furthermore, the data that were available were generated by nonuniform test methods and were therefore not directly comparable. To address these gaps, a primary activity of this cooperative agreement was to develop a standard large chamber test method that could provide comparable emissions data when used by different laboratories to evaluated office equipment emissions.
