Developing the optimum help system using the LUCID method

In this paper the authors describe the application of the Logical User Interface Design (LUCID) method to the development of a Windows based help system. LUCID is a participative emthod which, through the integration of Taguchi techniques fromthe domain of toal quality management, attempts not only ot develop usable human-computer interfae,s but to dientify the optimum, or most usable, interface. A outline of the method together with detalied results fromthe first commercial implementation are presened. The method is shown to provide powerful support to the optimisation of a commerical on-line help system.
