IAEA ACTIVITIES RELATED TO ACCIDENT ANALYSIS OF WWER TYPE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

The IAEA activities related to accident analysis of WWER type nuclear power plants (NPPs) date from 1992, long before the international community focused its attention on the safety of this type of reactor. At the beginning, the IAEA activities were restricted to the provision of technical assistance in terms of computer codes for safety analysis and promotion of exchange of information in this field. Later, realizing that for the analysis of NPPs designed in the former Soviet Union validation and assessment of the computer codes was required, the IAEA organized a series of standard problem exercises. More recently, taking into account the current status of available codes and expertise in countries using WWER type reactors, the IAEA activities were redirected to the development of guidelines for accident analysis in the various tasks related to plant safety upgrading. A summary review of past activities is given and current activities and prospects for the future are discussed.
