Hot sections of olefin plants may differ significantly in their fire box - and coil technologies. This variety originates from different attitudes towards a number of objectives : achieve high production capacity per coil with an optimum ratio of the ethylene and propylene yields, guarantee smooth operation for the retained feedstocks and maximize the run length between decoking. These objectives, together with economics and constraints arising from metallurgical limits, safety aspects and environmental regulations lead to the selection of the furnace - and coil configuration and their operating conditions. Given the complex interplay of heat transfer, hydrodynamics and raction kinetics various solutions are possible.
