The effect of binder add-on and binder glass transition temperature on the tensile and elongation properties of resin bonded nonwoven structures was evalauted. Tensile strength tests were performed using an Instron Tensile tester and a Kawabata Biaxial tester. A cut strip tensile test was found to give substantially higher strength and elongation values than that produced using a biaxial tester. The greater value is attributed to fibers locking together with increased friction as caused by the oisson effect. It was concluded that cut strip tensile testing overestimates the tensile and elongation properties of nonwovens and is therefore is considered to be erroneous for many end use applications.
