In this paper a novel design of slit loaded rectangular microstrip antenna with proximity fed technique is presented. The proposed antenna has two layers substrate with patch on upper layer and the feedline is placed on the lower layer between two dielectric substrates. The edge of the feedline is located at a point where antenna input impedance is 50Ω. In this study a slit etched on one of the radiating edge of the rectangular patch to obtain four frequency bands and then by etching a slit on both radiating edges of the patch it is made to operate for five frequency bands. The overall impedance bandwidth of about 79.04 % is achieved which is 9.22% more as compared to an antenna without slits. The antenna exhibits nearly omnidirectional radiation characteristics with peak gain of about 8.89 dB. The antenna may find the application in WLAN and ISM.
