In rough grinding for high performance and fine polishing such as mirror-like polishing with coated abrasive belt, the backings of abrasive belts are much too weak to convey the tension load causing lower machining efficiency, breakage of abrasive belt, damage of surface quality, and more tool expense. With the structure of the new abrasive belt illustrated and analysed, a new type of coated abrasive belt based on tooth-shaped backings for both rough grinding and fine polishing is invented to overcome the problems of belt breakage, lower cutting performance, and higher machining cost, which changes transmission way from friction to synchronous meshing. Various tests prove that this new type of belt is effective and useful for industrial applications, bringing up many advantages such as simpler setup, stable and reliable machined surface quality, machining time and cost reduction, high productivity. It might become an innovate member of the family of coated abrasive belts, and may make it possible for automation of fine polishing as mirror-like finish to be realized in actual industry applications.
