Surface Improvement of Silk Fibroin by Grafting Ferulic Acid and Its Derivatives

Silk fibroin (SF) has been used as textile fiber in China for centuries. Recently, SF has been found to be employed in many medical applications. As a biomedical material, the interaction between its surface and biological environment must be considered. The materials in contact with blood often induce thrombus formation, thus the surface of SF materials should be modified to improve hemocompatibility when they are used as blood-contacting materials. Ferulic Acid (FA) is an active ingredient of many Chinese herbal medicines such as Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, Angelica sinensis Diels and Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, which have been used to treat cardiovascular disease by Chinese physicians for thousands of years. In this paper, we study the graft of FA and its derivatives onto the SF surface and discuss the antithrombogenicity of the modified materials.
